How to Cleanse and Charge Your Crystals: Evidence-Based Methods
Mary Ann LaneIf you've recently added crystals to your collection, you've likely encountered the advice to "cleanse" and "charge" them. But what do these terms actually mean, and which methods are safe for which stones? This guide breaks down the most common approaches with the mineralogical context you need to make informed choices — because not every method works for every crystal.

Why Cleanse and Charge Crystals?
Cleansing refers to clearing a crystal of accumulated energetic residue — particularly useful after purchasing a new stone (which has passed through many hands), after an emotionally intense period, or after using a crystal for focused healing work.
Charging refers to restoring or amplifying a crystal's energetic potential, often by exposing it to natural energy sources like sunlight, moonlight, or the earth itself.
From a mineralogical standpoint, crystals are stable structures — their physical properties don't change through use. The practice of cleansing and charging is rooted in metaphysical tradition and intentional practice rather than measurable science. That said, the rituals themselves have real value: they create mindful moments of connection with your stones and reinforce your intentions.
Method 1: Selenite — The Easiest and Safest Option
Selenite is unique among crystals in that it is widely considered self-cleansing and capable of cleansing other stones placed near or on it. This makes it the most practical everyday cleansing tool, especially for stones that can't tolerate water or sunlight.
How to use it: Place your crystals on a Selenite cleansing bowl or beside a Selenite tower overnight. The Selenite bracelet charger is particularly useful for jewelry pieces.
Safe for: All crystals.
Avoid: Getting Selenite itself wet — it is monoclinic gypsum with a Mohs hardness of 2, making it water-soluble.

Method 2: Moonlight
Moonlight is one of the gentlest and most universally safe charging methods. The full moon is traditionally considered the most powerful time, though any moon phase carries its own energy — new moon for new intentions, waning moon for release.
How to use it: Place crystals on a windowsill or outside under the moon overnight. Even indirect moonlight through glass is effective.
Safe for: All crystals — moonlight does not fade color or damage any mineral.
Best for: Amethyst, Labradorite, Moonstone, Rose Quartz, and any stone connected to intuition or the divine feminine.
Method 3: Sunlight
Sunlight is a powerful charging method, but it comes with an important caveat: many crystals will fade with prolonged sun exposure due to the effect of UV light on color-causing impurities or inclusions.
Safe for short exposure (1–2 hours): Clear Quartz, Black Tourmaline, Citrine (natural), Carnelian.
Avoid sun exposure entirely: Amethyst (fades to pale yellow), Rose Quartz (fades), Fluorite (fades), Aquamarine, Celestite, Kunzite, and most pastel-colored stones.
How to use it: Place sun-safe crystals in morning light for no more than 1–2 hours. Avoid midday sun intensity.
Method 4: Sound
Sound cleansing uses vibrational frequency to clear and reset a crystal's energy field. This is one of the most practical methods for large collections, as it cleanses many stones simultaneously without any physical contact.
How to use it: Use a singing bowl, tuning fork, or even a clear bell tone near your crystals. Allow the sound to wash over them for several minutes. This method is particularly effective for stones displayed in groups.
Safe for: All crystals — sound cleansing carries no risk of physical damage.
Best for: Large collections, display minerals, and stones that are too delicate or porous for other methods.
Method 5: Earth Burial
Returning a crystal to the earth is one of the oldest cleansing traditions, rooted in the understanding that crystals formed within the earth and are naturally recharged by it.
How to use it: Bury your crystal in clean soil — either in your garden or in a pot of natural earth — for 24 hours to several days. Mark the spot carefully. Rinse gently with water after retrieval (check water safety first).
Safe for: Hard, non-porous stones (Quartz family, Jasper, Obsidian, Tourmaline).
Avoid: Soft or porous stones (Selenite, Malachite, Pyrite, Halite) which can be damaged by moisture in soil.
Method 6: Water — Use With Caution
Running water is a traditional cleansing method, but it is one of the most commonly misapplied. Many popular crystals are damaged or destroyed by water exposure, so this method requires careful attention to mineralogy.
Water-safe crystals (Mohs hardness 6+, non-porous, non-reactive): Clear Quartz, Amethyst, Citrine, Smoky Quartz, Jasper, Obsidian, Agate, Tiger's Eye, Aventurine, Black Tourmaline.
Never submerge in water:
- Selenite & Satin Spar (dissolves — Mohs 2)
- Malachite (toxic copper content)
- Pyrite (rusts and can release sulfuric acid)
- Halite / Rock Salt (dissolves)
- Fluorite (can be damaged over time)
- Calcite (Mohs 3, slowly dissolves)
- Lepidolite, Kyanite, Angelite, Celestite
How to use it safely: Hold water-safe stones under cool running water for 30–60 seconds with intention. Pat dry immediately and allow to air dry fully before storing.
A Simple Daily Practice
You don't need an elaborate ritual to maintain your crystals. A simple, consistent practice is more effective than occasional intensive cleansing. Consider:
- Keeping a Selenite bowl on your nightstand where worn or used crystals rest overnight
- Setting crystals on a windowsill during the full moon each month
- Using a singing bowl or bell as part of a weekly reset ritual
- Carrying a Selenite pocket stone to cleanse smaller pieces on the go
